Woltemade swapped Stuttgart for Newcastle in a deal worth up to £69 million ($93m) last month, and while this is a big opportunity for the striker, his national manager has admitted it is "not ideal" for top German players to leave the Bundesliga for the Premier League.

He told reporters, "I'm happy when they play a lot of games and get a lot of minutes, that's the most important thing for me. It's not ideal for the German Bundesliga that the best German players are moving to England. But that's how it is. It's kind of normal at this period of time."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Nagelsmann's comments come after Germany suffered a shock 2-0 loss in Slovakia in midweek – their first-ever defeat on foreign soil in World Cup qualifying. Woltemade started in the game but was powerless to stop his side falling to a disappointing reverse. The German boss will hope the 6ft 6in forward finds his goalscoring touch at Newcastle.

Before Woltemade potentially makes his Newcastle debut at home to Wolves in the Premier League next Saturday, the 23-year-old could line up for Germany in their World Cup qualifier against Northern Ireland on Sunday night.
